The Amazing Service Dog!
Service Dog training is some of the most spectacular and difficult training in the canine world. It takes many years of dedication and patience to produce quality Service Dogs. We often take ‘throw away’ dogs that people don’t want or can’t handle and turn them into some of the most amazing dogs in the world!

All of our Service Dog candidates have come from rescues, shelters, or directly from rescue situations. To date we have not purchased or bred any dogs for service work. This is a win win situation, being able to save a dog that would most likely have been destroyed, training him, and being able to place him with a disabled person.

Service Dogs have the right, set out by our federal government, to go almost anywhere their handlers go. Service Dogs are not considered pets, they are considered to be ‘Service Animals’.

For more information on the rights of access of Service Dogs, feel free to call us and ask any questions you might have.

Training:
The training that goes into a Service Dog is quite extensive. Many trainers claim to know how, but few are producing the results needed to qualify the dog as a Service Dog. It is most important to gain a very high level of reliability in the command to response ratio of the finished Service Dog. You will notice in one of our videos the dog I am handling will retrieve the Quad Cane many times in repetition. This is one of the key elements to the training process, making sure the dog will be extremely reliable when commanded to perform a physical task. Because in this moment the handler is in need of a Service Dog that will truly be ready, willing, and able to perform.

Transition:
The transition of placing the Service Dog with the new owner can be a little tricky. However, a well trained dog will be able to make the transition. We do take time to make sure the dog is compatible with the handler but we don’t waste time in this area. Typically, within a few weeks to a few months the two are working like clock work. The dog begins to hone in on the handler and his needs. It’s an amazing thing to see and is very gratifying for us as trainers. Watch my video below of Tiko & Edison as I describe such a spectacular relationship that developed outside of the realm of the training.

The dogs:
All of our dogs are from shelters or rescue situations. Therefore, it’s a win win situation saving a dog’s life and placing him with a disabled person who is in need. Most of our dogs are Labrador Retrievers or Golden Retrievers. Although, from time to time we will use a mixed breed, if the dog shows a high level of aptitude. Our dogs are put through many different tests to evaluate the dog’s ability to handle stress and to function in many different contexts.

Your dog:
We are open to training your dog, however, we will have to discuss many points before taking on the task. There are many areas of the training that people do not understand. We have to assess each dog and handler situation and evaluate the client’s expectations vs. the feasibility of the dog’s aptitude for training. Unfortunately, many people think they have a legitimate Service Dog, but the reality is that most people that have not worked with an experienced trainer that specializes in training Service Dogs, do not have legitimate Services Dogs. This does not mean that the dog cannot qualify with the correct training. If you have a Service Dog and you are not sure if he qualifies or you have any questions about training, please feel free to call us and ask any questions you might have.

Pricing:
Our Service Dogs start at $15,000 and go up depending on the amount and difficulty of the tasks you are needing from the dog. Service Dogs can be trained to perform many complex tasks. However, most people are simply looking for a few simple tasks. Keep in mind, in order for a dog to qualify as a Service Dog, giving him full access to almost all places his handler goes, he must perform physical tasks that relate to the handler’s disabilities. It is best to call us so that we can get an understanding of your expectations and discuss what it is that would most likely work best for you.

Waiting Lists:
There is no waiting list with us. It is simply a matter of finding the right dog for you and training him. In some cases, we will have a trained service dog ready for placement. However, if we do not, it will typically take 3 to 6 months. During this time it is possible to visit your dog to see what the training process is, to begin to understand giving commands, and obviously to bond with your dog. It is also good for us to understand what your disabilities are and to see what you are capable of doing physically. This information will help us to adjust our training to meet your needs. Once the training is finished, we usually send the dog home with you for a couple weeks. After this time spent with you, we usually bring the dog back to adjust some of the training, again to make sure the dog is going to work correctly for you and to make sure the training fits your needs. It is VERY important to us to make absolutely sure the dogs are placed at the right time and to make sure the dog is working for you correctly.

The Perfect Dog:
A service dog almost has to be a ‘Perfect Dog’! Some might argue that he has to be better than a perfect dog. The reality is that all dogs have issues of some sort, some worse than others, but every dog will have an issue with something. We do our best to pick dogs that will be as close to perfect as possible, but in some cases, it just can’t be avoided. The client we work with will have to be patient and understanding in the process. If you want a dog now, cannot wait, cannot be flexible, or cannot be patient, then we are not the right trainers for you.

DO YOU HAVE SERVICE DOGS WE CAN CHOOSE FROM?

We do not have a kennel full of dogs that you can come and choose from, that would not be good for the dogs themselves. However, we do often have dogs that are trained and ready for placement. In most cases, those dogs need a little adjustment, but they are usually ready to go relatively quickly. If we do not have a dog ready for you, we will discuss a plan and see what we can offer you. We rarely have a 'Waiting List', but it's important that we do things correctly and make sure we are teaming the right dog and person together. Please call us for more information.

WHAT IS SERVICE DOG TRAINING?

Service dog training is a very complex type of training that takes many years to perfect. There are many different types of service dogs, and many different tasks that service dogs can perform. One of the most important things is that your service dog qualifies to be a service under ADA requirements. We are now proud to offer dog boot camp training in Hollister, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Solvang, Salinas, Morro Bay, Big Sur, Orcutt, Santa Maria, Nipomo, Gilroy, Santa Cruz, San Jose, Atascadero, Soledad, Monterey, and surrounding areas.

WE EVEN GET OUT OF STATE SERVICE DOG TRAINING CLIENTS!

Our out of state Dog Training clients have the option of sending their dogs to us for Doggy Boot Camp. Upon the finishing of the training, the client can come to us and stay for a few days to receive one on one training with us. This Dog Training Boot Camp Board and Train program is a very popular and successful program. We even had dogs come to use for service dog training from Hawaii!

CAN MY DOG BE TRAINED TO BE A SERVICE DOG?

We do take on clients that want their dog trained to be a legit service dog. Typically, as long as the dog is social and has some drive to work, then we can get the job done. If your dog is showing aggression, then you will have some problems. Nevertheless, it's best to call us so we can chat and see what might be the best route for you to go.

i would like you to meet tiko & edison

Tiko and his parents came to us for help in their search for a service dog for their son, Tiko, who was diagnosed with Autism. They knew they wanted a service dog, but they were confused on how to get the process started, and they did have some apprehensions. Through our knowledge and experience, we were able to make them comfortable and help them step by step through the process.

We matched Tiko up with a very sweet young dog who was named Edison. Edison, like most young dogs, had a few minor issues through the training process, but after the required training, he is referred to now as ‘perfect!’

I trained Edison, and I saw changes in Tiko that were amazing! I actually brought things to Tiko’s mom’s attention that she hadn’t noticed. Tiko’s behavior changed in a positive way over the course of him coming to see Edison while he was in training. One thing I would never do is sell a service dog based on creating such a mysterious and unique bond between the dog and his new handler. However, I can attest to the fact that very unique things can happen in the process; things that can have a great positive impact on a person’s life!

I am very fortunate to have met Tiko and his parents, and to have them as a story in my life and my career.

we helped richen get a service dog!

Richen is an eleven year old boy who has autism. Like a large majority of people with autism, Richens struggles with communication and is still only minimally verbal. A dog is especially helpful to a person who is not yet fully verbal as it is such a great relief to be able to relax into a non-verbal communication with an animal.

We wanted to help Richen get a service dog. Therefore, we worked with Richen and his family to raise the funds to search for, procure, train, and deliver a highly trained service dog to Richen. The experience has been nothing short of life changing.

When attempting a task this complex, you are sure to hit some speed bumps along the way. However, Richen now has Chiko, and we are working with the family to make sure that all aspects are going smooth.
