CAUTION! The sale of protection dogs has grown rapidly in the last few years. With online access to youtube videos and dog training equipment, everybody is a ‘self-proclaimed’ specialist. Because many of these people do not have the experience needed to ethically procure, train, and deliver a quality protection dog, in many cases you will end up with dog that is overly-protective and a liability, or you will end up with a nervy dog that will not truly protect you when the time comes. We recommend steering clear of any trainer that stocks protection dogs for people to choose from, and steer clear of anybody trying to sell you a Malinois. Please be careful when purchasing your family protector, and feel free to contact us with any questions you might have.

K-9 Behavior Services produces the best Personal, Home, Executive, and Elite Protection Dogs in the world! Through many years of training, networking, and developing the art of Protection Dog training, the company has established an excellent reputation of being the best provider of quality Protection Dogs in Los Angeles, Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, and Orange County. K-9 Behavior Services offers custom imported young dogs, in-kennel puppies, and young dogs that are raised and trained, by Jeremy Talamantes and his staff. Jeremy has sold many protection dogs to the rich and famous, and also to people that want a great loving companion and family protector. There are many different approaches, trust assured, we always choose the route that is best for our clients and their safety.

“Most dogs I have sold do not repel out of helicopters, jump through rings of fire, handcuff bad guys, and drag them to you. Most of my clients are looking for a social and loving companion, that will truly protect them, and their family, when they need it. One thing for sure… nobody can afford to have a walking liability. Therefore, first my dogs are social, then my dogs are protectors. I do not sell to thugs, gang bangers, a-holes, or people with big egos looking for a mean dog to scare people. I do not sell Malinois (Belgian Shepherds). I have extensive experience breeding, raising, training, and selling them to working homes and law enforcement. I know the breed very well, and I know that they are not suited for home protection. My advice is to stay very clear of any trainer trying to sell you one, I don’t care what fantasy line of BS they give you; trust me, I know most of them. I have a stellar reputation in protection dog sales, and I aim to keep it that way. Feel free to call with any questions or concerns you might have. -Jeremy Talamantes”

Our Dogs:
K-9 Behavior Services offers Protection Dogs that are uniquely stable and confident. From a very young age, the company will begin to socialize and acclimatize the puppies to understand their surroundings so that as young dogs they will have a strong character and be ready to build their confidence and sociability.

The Protection Dogs sold by K-9 Behavior Services will be put under high levels of physical and psychological pressure to ensure, that if the time ever comes, and you truly look to your dog for help, he will be there for you and not run away with his tail between his legs (so to speak). Jeremy Talamantes will personally get into the bite suit himself and test every single dog sold. Our staff will handle each and every dog and make sure the dog’s obedience is at the highest level possible, even under extreme pressure. Our accolades are unsurpassed and we have proven to have the skills necessary to produce the best Protection Dogs in the business!

The dogs offered start at $30,000 and go up depending on breed, age, titles, and client requirements. Most of our dogs sell between $30,000 and $50,000, depending on many factors. Our dogs that sell above $50,000 typically have specific titles, blood lines, and origins. Regardless of the price, there truly is no dollar amount that can be put on these dogs when considering the hundreds of hours that go into the training, not to mention the thought that one of these dogs could actually save your or one of your loved one’s lives. The reality of today’s society is that it can be a cruel and ill intentioned one. Having a quality Protection Dog means that you and your family will sleep much more comfortably at night.

Call today for more information and to ask any questions you might have. The staff at K-9 Behavior Services is always willing to discuss your needs and assist you in understanding the purchase process 818-216-8960.

Do You Have Dogs We Can Pick From?
At K-9 Behavior Services, we always try to have a couple dogs in kennel that will meet our client’s needs. Because it is not good to have dogs sitting in kennels not getting the proper socialization, training, and basic interaction with people, we do not stock a bunch of dogs for people to come along and pick from at any given time. Where as most protection dog training companies will try to convince you that they are socializing their in kennel dogs correctly, the possibility of their dogs getting the attention they need is very slim. Some companies will claim that their staff takes the dogs home and spends all day with them, again, highly unlikely! We have been in this business professionally since 1995, since our beginning we have made a lot of great connections. It is these connections that provide us the opportunity to have access to amazing dogs around the country and internationally that can fit any client’s needs. It is more important to us to find the right dog for our clients and their families than it is to sell you a dog that has been sitting in our kennels that we need to unload.

What Is A ‘Real’ Protection Dog?
For one to claim he owns a ‘real’ protection dog that will truly protect him in the street in a real life situation with opposition from an attacker is a bold statement! It takes a lot from a dog to have the confidence and character to battle with a bad guy when he thinks its a real situation and a real fight. We are receiving more and more calls from people that are searching for a real protection dog and have spoken to a lot of trainers that are either unqualified, overzealous, or just down right too pushy in selling their dogs. At K-9 Behavior Services, we take our time to answer your questions and make you feel comfortable with this investment. We have to make sure you are prepared to live with and handle this type of dog. After all, this is not a pet… this is a Protection Dog!

Buyer Beware!
Buyer beware! Please be careful when searching for a protection dog and a protection dog trainer. There are a lot of wannabes out there right now preying on the inexperienced individual that is seeking companionship and protection for his family. We are seeing more and more cases of people getting ripped off by wannabe protection dog trainers posing as professionals. We are always willing to meet with our clients and share our passion for protection dogs. Feel free to call at any time to discuss why our dogs are the best, and set up a time to meet with us so we can prove it to you!

WHY DO PROTECTION DOGS COST SO MUCH MONEY?

In the dog training business, many dog trainers are not honest with themselves when calculating profit and loss. The amount of hours that are put into training a dog, even for basic obedience, is very excessive. Furthermore, when calculating the time that goes into training a protection dog, it's far beyond what a trainer could ever charge a client. Some protection dogs have years of training into them. When you calculate the hours of training, and combine that with housing the dog for one year the numbers grow rapidly! boarding a dog for one year is approximately $20,000, and that's at a very conservative rate of $45 per day. If you continue to add training on that, it will get even more expensive quickly. If you calculate as an individual trainer, it will add about $45,000 for one session per day for one year. If you calculate as a business with a really good trainer in staff, it will add about $10,000 for one year. Either way you calculate it, you are looking at $30,000 to $65,000 for one year. From a trainer's perspective, you also have to look at profit margin, liability, labor intensity, etc. I hope that helps to explain the cost. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. -Jeremy 818-216-8960

SHOULD I GET A PUPPY AND RAISE AND TRAIN HIM MYSELF?

Can it be done? Yes. But I do not recommend it. There are so many mistakes you will make along the way, you can very likely 'Ruin' the dog if you are not careful. Assuming, first of all, that you are lucky enough to even get the right puppy! One big mistake people make is grinding in demanding obedience too early. By doing this, you can end up with a dog that feels apprehensive to anything that might get him into trouble. This approach typically stifles, if not completely ruins, the dog's aptitude for his protection training. It is best to work with a professional that can correctly guide you through the process. Call us now so we can better answer all of your protection dog raising and training questions.

WHAT ARE THE BEST BREEDS FOR PROTECTION DOGS?

No trainer should be recommending a Malinois! If you are considering working with a trainer that is recommending a Malinois... run for the hills. I realize that the trainer can handle the Malinois, but you will have problems with him eventually. I have very extensive experience with Malinois, and I am simply telling you the truth. I always recommend a well bred working line German Shepherd Dog. A well bred working line GSD will give you everything a Malinois will give you, but he will be more tolerant of his surroundings, and he will have an off switch. If you are considering a Malinois, please call us first so we can explain the risks to you in more detail.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A PROTECTION DOG AND A DETERRENT DOG?

It's pretty simple, a protection dog has been trained to actually engage with a threat, or when told to, and will attack and fight the threat when needed. This is a very special dog, with spectacular nerves, the necessary drives, and is also a social dog, whom is not a walking liability. A deterrent dog is simply a dog that naturally barks from a territorial or protective desire, or has been trained to bark on command. A deterrent dog should not be trusted to actually engage and fight a person if you need him to do so. I am not saying that a deterrent dog is not a good dog, he simply has a limit that he will stop at. If you are considering one or the other, give us a call so we can explain the two in more detail.

WILL MY DOG PROTECT ME NATURALLY, WITHOUT TRAINING?

It's possible that your dog can be trained to be a protection dog. However, your dog does need to have the character for the work and must have the right drives. There are also many different expectations that people may have for their dogs when they ask this question. Some people simply want a dog that will bark at people and scare them. Other people want a dog that will repel from a helicopter, jump through a ring of fire, tackle the bad guy, hand cuff the bad guy, and then drive the bad guy to jail. It is important to always be realistic in your expectations.

Jeremy Talamantes, certified french ring decoy

Jeremy Talamantes was a NARA certified French Ring Decoy, a member of ‘SoCal Mal’ (Southern California Malinois Ringsport Club), the founder, president, and the training decoy for the ‘Los Angeles Ring Club’, and served on the Board of Directors for ‘NARA’, the North American Ring Association.

Learning the art of the ‘Ring Sports’, helped Jeremy become a better protection dog training decoy, and allowed him the benefits of training with various people that had the same passion and love for protection dog training. Jeremy decoyed many NARA sanctioned French Ring trials with very positive reviews.

Although ‘Sport Dogs’ are not necessarily home protection dogs, training in the sports will definitely help a trainer understand many aspects of aggression. French Ring is arguably the most difficult protection dog sport in the world!

Another successful NARA French ring trial decoyed!

One thing about protection sport dog training, is that you get the opportunity to train with other people that are also passionate about training dogs. When you go to a protection sport dog trial, such as French Ring, Mondioring, or IPO (Schutzhund), is that you will see groups of people talking about training, techniques, dogs, breeding, etc. It’s definitely a great opportunity to learn new things!

We always recommend that clients do their research before purchasing a protection dog. We never want to sell a dog to someone that is not positive about what they want. We are willing to educate people, but it is always best to have some knowledge when contacting us.

We know that the internet information out there can be confusing, so call us when you are ready so we can answer all of your questions 818-216-8960.

soooo... what exact experience do you have training protection dogs?

True experience is not something you can fake. I can tell immediately how much experience someone does or doesn’t have, as soon as I start seeing them work with a protection dog. In most cases, they don’t have nearly the experience they claim to have. Ugh. And often times, these are the people that are selling protection dogs to the public.

I can’t even tell you how many bites I have taken from dogs! I can tell you that one of the most dangerous bites I ever took was the one to the left. In this case, I was working a Malinois, training him for French Ring. This particular dog had some problems, from training with a less than spectacular trainer, so I was trying to fix some of his problems. In protection dog training, especially French Ring competition, a dog has to target his bites properly. With crappy training, comes crappy bites, which can be very dangerous; obviously. We were actually doing some upper body bitework, and the dog went high and grabbed the collar of my bite suit and my neck at the same time. I had the experience to know to grab his head and pull it into my neck, so he wouldn’t thrash my neck, or try and re-grip my neck. This was definitely a bite I could have died because of.

Experience like this is something that you cannot replicate, that most people will never have in their lives, but I learned a whole hell of a lot that day. I’m happy to report that the dog went on to become a French Ring II, largely because of the hundreds and hundreds of bites I took from him; oh yea, and the one scary one. 🙂

Many people dispute that ‘Sport Dogs’ are not real protection dogs. There is a lot of truth to that, but it does not mean that a sport dog cannot be converted to a real protection dog.
